Good agents join a team they can see, from people who were straight with them about the work and the pay. This guide covers recruiting from the first conversation to a licensed agent on day one.

Agency owners search "how to recruit insurance agents" and "how to recruit life insurance agents"; candidates search for an insurance agent community before they commit.

## 1. Decide who you are hiring

Licensed agents switching agencies, career changers who still need a license, and part-time agents are different hires with different timelines. Pick the one your training and leads can actually support.

## 2. Describe the opportunity honestly

- How agents are paid, including commission splits, any advances and how chargebacks work
- What the agency provides: leads, training, mentorship, tools
- What agents pay for themselves: licensing, exam fees, E&O coverage, leads
- What a normal first 90 days looks like

> **Keep income claims supportable** Describe how pay works rather than promising a figure. Candidates who were oversold leave, and income claims can create legal exposure.

## 3. Find candidates

- Referrals from your current agents, who know what the job takes
- Licensed agents at other agencies looking for better support
- Career changers from sales, service and teaching
- Job boards and local networking
- Your own posts and videos about what the work is really like

When you contact candidates by phone or text, follow do-not-call and consent rules the same way you would for clients.

## 4. Let them see the team before they commit

An open information session, a recorded day-in-the-life, and a chance to ask current agents questions do more than any pitch. Candidates want to know who they will work with.

## 5. Screen with a real conversation

- Talk through why they want the job and what they expect to earn
- Run a short role-play of a first call
- Agree a licensing timeline if they are not licensed yet

## 6. Get them licensed and onboarded

Pre-licensing education, the state exam and any fingerprinting or background requirements vary by state and line of authority. Once they are licensed, follow the [insurance agent onboarding checklist](https://alliedtribes.com/guides/insurance-agent-onboarding-checklist).
