How to monetize a group online

A group earns when members can pay for more of what they already come for. These are the seven ways to do it, and an order to add them in that does not drive members away.

Updated

This guide answers what people search as "how to monetize a community" and "how to make money from a small community". On Allied Tribes the group is a Tribe.

Seven ways to earn

  1. Paid membership tiers: a monthly or yearly price for deeper access
  2. Courses: a structured program, sold on its own or included in a tier
  3. Event tickets: workshops, intensives and in-person meetups
  4. One-to-one sessions: paid written answers or video calls for members who want direct help
  5. Digital products: templates, scripts, recordings and guides
  6. Tips: members thanking you, or each other, for a useful post
  7. Pay-per-view posts: a single deep-dive that members unlock

Add them in this order

  1. Keep a free level so new people can see the value before paying
  2. Sell what members already ask you for, usually your time or your method
  3. Add one paid tier with a clear difference from the free level
  4. Turn repeated answers into a course or a product
  5. Offer one-to-one sessions to the members who want the most help

Run the numbers

As an example: if 25 members pay $20 a month, that is $500 a month in sales. On Allied Tribes that costs about $54 a month all-in on Pro. Compare platforms at your own numbers with the fee calculator.

Doing it on Allied Tribes

Every one of the seven is built in: paid Tribes, Lessons, events and live video, Adepts, and digital products, tips and pay-per-view posts. Payouts go to your own Stripe account.
